I am planning to move to Seattle in a few months if things don't improve here in Atlanta. From what I could tell the numbers say it's an easier time but I would rather get some 'man on the street' opinions.

Re: How's the IT job market here?
Tue, September 1, 2009 - 8:10 AMIt's tough competition for IT jobs out here so it depends on what exactly you do. I've had friends get laid off recently from tech jobs and those with very specific skills are having a hard time finding a job. I also have friends who are doing well and others working contract for Microsoft or Adobe. -

Re: How's the IT job market here?
Tue, September 1, 2009 - 8:26 AMSounds like the same problem I've had in Atlanta (though the numbers are marginally better for Seattle).
I had applied to a dozen recruiters and half of them the week later had 'let go' of the recruiter I had talked to. The one job interview I had in the last 3 months was for CNN and they point blank told me they could get a PHD for $17/hour now (i do not have a PHD)
Even the teachers here are taking a beating as Atlanta plans to "let go" of a couple hundred over the summer and won't be returning in the fall.
I always tried to keep my tech skills as diverse as possible but I am more a linux/unix guy than windows. -

Re: How's the IT job market here?
Tue, September 1, 2009 - 9:54 AMSadly I fear it's like neighbors comparing who's house was more screwed up by Katrina, I have talked to friends in NY and some places in Cali but the story is widely the same. Could be worse, I have one friend who is about to graduate with a degree in Journalism.
And actually I like rain :)
Having grown up in Florida I got burned out on the humid heat, where it rarely rained but always felt like you were in a sauna. When I went up to NY I was told how I'd never handle the cold and found strangely it wasn't nearly as bad as people insisted. Of course the locals said it was global warming to blame but I rather liked being able to wear PJ's in bed during autumn. -

Re: How's the IT job market here?
Tue, September 1, 2009 - 12:30 PMHaving lived in a half dozen cities I can attest to the pleasant experience of travel and living in great metropolitan places, of course this is more enjoyable when you aren't fretting over your livelihood :)
I have a roomate who has also been eager to move to Seattle but being in the graphic arts trade he's even more pessimistic about his employment options than I am.
